5 Ways You Can Prepare Your Home for Flooding
1. Turn off the gas.
Before flooding or any disaster even begins, having a plan and following it is of the utmost importance. Begin by locating all gas sources on your property; close the valves, and call your local gas company to have them come and lock them. Doing so will prevent gas leaks or an explosion, which could be a much larger disaster.
2. Unplug all appliances.
Water and electricity do not mix! Prevent electrical fires and electrocution by unplugging appliances and turning off all electrical sources, including your circuit breaker. Additionally, anything battery operated needs to be relocated to higher ground where they cannot come in contact with water.
3. Elevate furniture.
If the floodwaters rise, you must ensure all of your furniture, and other belongings are off of the floor. If you are expecting water to be several feet high, elevate items to a height above that amount. Anything you can't elevate should be covered with plastic sheeting or tarps to protect them from water damage.
4. Seal your home.
Water will attempt to enter your home from all possible entryways, including windows and doors. Be sure to close all windows and secure outside doors with sandbags or lumber to prevent water from seeping inside. If you have a sump pump, check to ensure it is in good working order.
5. Protect your valuables.
Locate important documents, keepsakes, and items of value and pack them into sealed, waterproof containers. Move them to a location that is both dry and elevated, preferably to a higher level of your home or the highest location in your home.
