Turkish police responded to a call around 10:23 AM. They discovered her body at her home in Istanbul, Turkey, under suspicious circumstances. She was found dead from an apparent heart attack, however, the cause of her death remains under investigation at this time.
Uzuner was also known for being a LGBTQ activist.
Uzuner who was a journalist was also a prominent LGBTQ+ activist in the country and worked as a reporter. She was one of the main organizers of Istanbul’s Pride march in 2022 and had been an advocate for the rights of LGBTQ+ people in Turkey.
Istanbul’s governor and others joined to offer condolences and condemnation after her death
İstanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya offered his condolences on Twitter, saying, “The death of Ikbal Uzuner, who worked relentlessly for the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals, has deeply saddened us. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones.” LGBTQ+ rights groups have condemned the attack, with many calling for a thorough investigation.
