Indonesia Bahrain Relationship
Political ties
Indonesia and Bahrain established diplomatic relations in 1976. The two countries have a close and friendly relationship, based on shared values of Islam and democracy. Indonesia is one of the largest Muslim-majority countries in the world, while Bahrain is a Shia-majority country. Both countries are members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
High-level visits between the two countries have been frequent. In 2018, Indonesian President Joko Widodo visited Bahrain, and in 2019, Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa visited Indonesia. The two leaders discussed a range of issues, including trade, investment, and defense cooperation.
Economic ties
Indonesia and Bahrain have a strong economic relationship. Bilateral trade between the two countries amounted to US$1.2 billion in 2019. Indonesia's main exports to Bahrain include palm oil, textiles, and furniture. Bahrain's main exports to Indonesia include oil, gas, and aluminum.
There are a number of Indonesian companies operating in Bahrain, including Bank Mandiri, Garuda Indonesia, and Indofood. Bahrain is also a popular destination for Indonesian tourists.
Defense cooperation
Indonesia and Bahrain have a close defense relationship. The two countries have signed a number of agreements on defense cooperation, including an agreement on military training and an agreement on the exchange of defense information.
Indonesia and Bahrain have also conducted joint military exercises. In 2019, the two countries conducted a joint naval exercise in the Persian Gulf.
Cultural ties
Indonesia and Bahrain have a strong cultural relationship. The two countries have a number of cultural exchange programs, including a program that allows Indonesian students to study in Bahrain and a program that allows Bahraini students to study in Indonesia.
There are also a number of cultural events that are held in both countries. In 2019, the Indonesian Embassy in Bahrain hosted a cultural festival that featured Indonesian music, dance, and food.
